The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it will hold supplementary elections in some polling units across five different Nigerian states, namely Kano, Lagos, Plateau, Rivers, and Sokoto, on Sunday, March 19, 2023. INEC's decision was made following disruption and violence during the general elections held in March 2023. The commission has urged eligible voters in the affected areas to come out and peacefully cast their ballots on March 19, 2023. INEC has promised that the elections will be free, fair, and credible and urges political parties, candidates, and their supporters to adhere to the electoral guidelines and code of conduct during the elections.
The supplementary elections in the aforementioned states are significant to the overall outcome of the general elections, and many political analysts and observers highlight the importance for the electoral process to remain peaceful and transparent, free of interference or irregularities, and a true representation of the people's wishes.
