One person has been confirmed dead as a violent protest erupted in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa state, on Sunday. It was learnt that the protest, which began as a peaceful demonstration, turned violent when a group of angry youths started attacking businesses and looting shops in the city center.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing dozens of young men wielding sticks, stones, and other weapons as they targeted shops, banks, and other businesses in the area. The situation reportedly escalated when the police arrived on the scene and fired tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters. Some of the demonstrators allegedly responded by throwing stones at the police, leading to clashes between the two groups. One person was reported dead as a result of the clashes, but it is not clear whether the victim was a protester, a police officer, or a bystander. Several others were also injured in the violence. The protest is said to have been fueled by a recent decision by the state government to close down several businesses owned by Fulani herdsmen, who are a significant minority group in Nasarawa State. The decision was reportedly taken in response to growing concerns about the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the area, including allegations of kidnappings, cattle rustling, and other criminal activities. The state government has condemned the violence and appealed to the protesters to remain peaceful and law-abiding. Security has been heightened in the area, and the police are said to be investigating the incident
