A mother and her five children have been killed following a bomb blast in Afghanistan's eastern province of Laghman. The explosion occurred when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb planted by the Taliban. The children's father was also in the car and survived the blast with injuries; he is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital. The family was travelling to a wedding ceremony when the tragedy happened.
A spokesperson for the governor of Laghman province accused the Taliban of being behind the attack. The group has been involved in a series of attacks targeting civilians and Afghan security forces in recent months following the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country. The incident has sparked outrage among Afghan citizens, who expressed their condolences to the bereaved family and called for an end to the violence and bloodshed in the country. The Taliban has yet to claim responsibility for this attack at the time of reporting. This year has seen a spike in violence in Afghanistan as the Taliban continues to ramp up their efforts to gain control of the country. Even as peace talks have been underway between the group and the Afghan government over the past several years, civilian casualties have increased. In October, a suicide bomber targeted a Shia mosque in the western city of Herat, killing dozens of Shia Muslims during Friday prayers. As the country remains in a fragile state, there is hope that the new government will be able to bring some stability to Afghanistan. In September, the Taliban and the Afghan government began long-awaited peace talks in Qatar. However, many Afghans remain skeptical of the prospects of a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the country.
