Today, 28 states in Nigeria will hold gubernatorial elections, with unpredictable outcomes expected. The elections will be held amid security concerns, especially in the northern parts of the country that have been affected by insurgency and other forms of violence. Some of the states in question are highly contested, and the elections are expected to be closely fought, with several upsets likely. Reports indicate that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is likely to face strong opposition in many of the states where elections are being held. Many Nigerians see the gubernatorial elections as an important opportunity to effect change and address the economic and social challenges facing the country.
Many Nigerians are hoping for a repeat of the unexpected opposition party wins in some states during the February 25th Presidential and National Assembly elections in today's governorship and State House of Assembly elections. While the House of Assembly election will hold across the country, the governorship poll will only hold in 28 states, as eight other states have off-season elections. Some of the states where opposition parties won during the presidential election, like Lagos, Abia, Oyo, Rivers, Enugu, Benue, Sokoto, Bauchi, Delta, Kano, Kaduna, and Plateau, are expected to have closely contested governorship elections. Members of the ruling parties in these states are said to be uneasy about the outcome of the elections.
