In the just-concluded Edo State House of Assembly election on Saturday, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) won thirteen seats while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) won nine seats. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP won in Akoko-Edo I, Akoko-Edo II, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North-East I, Esan North-East II, Esan South-East, Esan West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, Oredo East, Ovia North-East I, and Uhunmwode constituencies. In contrast, the APC won in Etsako West I, Etsako West II, Etsako West III, Etsako East II, Etsako Central, Owan West, Ovia North-East II, Ovia South West II, and Owan East constituencies. The election, which was held in nineteen local government areas and a total of twenty-four constituencies, was conducted peacefully, according to reports. Reacting to the outcome of the election, Mr. Osaigbovo lyoha, the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, described the party's performance as a win for democracy and an indication that the people of Edo State have confidence in the PDP-led government. "We are happy with the results of the election. It shows that the people know who truly has their interests at heart. We will continue to work hard and provide the best possible governance to the people of the state," said Mr. Iyoha. On the other hand, the APC also congratulated the PDP candidates who emerged victorious in the poll, while also thanking the Edo electorate for coming out to cast their votes.
"We thank the people of Edo State for their peaceful conduct during the election. Though we didn't win as much as we would have liked, we accept the outcome of the election in good faith, and we congratulate the winners," said Mr. John Mayaki, the Edo State Chairman of the APC. The newly elected lawmakers are expected to be sworn in by the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly at a date to be announced soon.
