According to a new report by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), 3 out of every 5 children in Nigeria, amounting to 78 million, are at risk of facing a water-related crisis including lack of access to clean drinking water and poor sanitation. Although Nigeria has made progress in providing better water sources, the issue of inadequate sanitation facilities persists.
UNICEF's report indicates that only one in four people in Nigeria practice good hygiene, which in turn leads to outbreaks of water-borne diseases like cholera and diarrhea. Sadly, girls are more affected than boys due to the lack of access to clean water and a disparity in sanitation services, which renders them vulnerable to different forms of gender-based violence.
